This was my first paid job outside of University, where I was commissioned to make 22 digital characters based on celebrities and student stereotypes. The publication was a student magazine so it was a nice place to start leaving Uni, I had a bit of fun doing this.

I (heart) Origami

In times of stress.. when I need some time to unwind, I simply resort to a square piece of paper. Either cut out from a magazine or out of my mass origami-paper selection and start folding. For the time it takes to make a piece, all my concentration goes into making precision folds and following the instructions to make what I see as the end result.

I came across this really good Origami website. It's great as it has hundreds of diagrams some of them really complex (I'm not at that stage yet, will probably go mad trying to figure out what the diagram is trying to tell me), but the websites is an excellent source for origami. Also they are in pdf form so it's a great source if your looking for origami vectors ;p

It's an all in one guide – brilliant for thoes looking for some inspiration.

Ah, what a genius logo design. The concept is so obvious when you think about it but carrying it off is another thing.This has been created by Stylo Design and they even made an entire font out of it. I am just in awe of it all.

Final Major Project: The Freshers Bible

The Freshers Bible was part of my final major project at the end of uni. The concept was to create a small booklet for student coming into university who don't know what to expect in this new city the would be ambarking on. The publication would be produced regional and given out free at universities via post, desplays and handouts.
The content would provide information about the city and it's attractions, bars, restaurants and places to go. Also top tips, existing student advice/stories and student work.

It's been a year since I last updated my blog... and I've got a lot to show for it. ahhhh.

Micro Summary of what's happened:

After graduating I won a placement for six weeks at a local magazine company, which then turned into a full-time job to my delight. Since then I've just been plowing away publication after publication - developing myself as a designer.

I will be slowly but surely be updating my blog from...... nnnnnnow on - I've neglected it for far too long. It's one of them things you think, shall I update it??.... maybe later and then forget about it. This is no good! So watch this space.

Grad Show

This is some images from our Grad Show - the theme was Cabaret. We had a live band and an award ceremony, It was a great evening. What topped it off was the award I won for Editorial Design/Magazine Design. I was awarded it for my Freshers Bible, which is a 20 page booklet giving freshers info, tips and local places to visit.

Experimental Font

The following process shows how I made a hand-rendered font adjacent to the Telescope font (previous post).

The finished font I named Pipe because of its obvious visual similarity to one, it wasn't my final outcome because there was no real rational behind it or even a target audience. I made it because it appealed to me.

The idea behind this font is that it links in one continuous pipe, even the space is a pipe. I wanted to make something that carries on flowing and is connected, something experimental and unique with typography.

Telescope Font

Telescope is a font I designed for an introduction media project. The purpose of this font is to appeal to designers and future employers. The following is the design process of the font:

The ideas stage; these are initial ideas I made in-order to flick my creative switch on.

As a point of reference I decided to look at M/M Paris for their experimental fashion typography - The Alphabet and The Alpha Men. They are well known for their hand-rendered, illustrative and expressive style.

The next three images are my own experimentations using fashion photography as a base form for a letter shape. It is done in the style of M/M Paris, which I found was very expressive and enjoyable to do. But I needed to make a font that will relate to the design audience (preferably graphic design or typography).

This is the development stage of the font design... I began by identify shapes from an image that looked like letter forms and got inspired by the 'D' letter form. It switched my creative light to full beam and I came up with a first draft of the alphabet - Telescope.

The concept behind Telescope is to look beyond design and not just the surface of what you see. Below is the final true type version of it and in practice.

This prototype teddy key-ring was made by hand and took me approximately 3 hours to make, including the fabric painting and blow-drying. I'm planing on making all my wilder beasts into cute collectable toys/accessories, each one having their own background and personality.

Wally Olins: The Brand Handbook is truly handy if you have a brand or if you just want to know a little bit about what a brand is and how it works. The book is very easy to read and is easy to understand. Its a great read, which I recommend to anyone that is confused on the brand subject.

Going on from the Chinese mythology influence, I decided to make my flag a little more authentic. So I made some dry point prints to really get the effect I wanted...

...and experimented with the use of color. The green works the best in context as the plain black print may be too bold.

One Flag Design Cycle

I started off by identifying the colors I wanted to use and what then meant. I then started experimenting with the colors as I wanted to portray the earth. I was coming up with one cliché after another...

So I began to look deeper into Earth and came up with core elements that keep our planet together and started developing further into it...

Finally I came up with the leaf skeleton concept. I did some background research into "The Tree of Life", which exists in many cultures. But I was particularly inspired by the Chinese mythologies and came up with another name for my piece, The Leaf of a Thousand Destinies. This basically portrays that there is more then one destiny, you don't necessarily need to stick to one. Its on you if you want to turn your life around and make it a positive one.

One Flag

This was one of the hardest briefs I have done... to create a global flag. Free from cliché's this flag represents what should be unity of humanity.
"The Growth of Human Coherence" (the name of the flag) is made of the vital elements that makes the world go around. It is an abstract leaf skeleton, which encapsulates growth, air and food. I chose to illustrate a leaf for such a large audience because it is globally recognizable, wether your from London or Zimbabwe you know what a leaf looks like. For some its more important as droughts occur, one may celebrate to see plant life growing. For others it is a sign of love and affection. This positive vibe is essential in order for it to relate to people in a symbolic way.

This is an extremely inspirational book I'm reading for my dissertation on the subject "The balance between Branding and Advertising". Which asks the important question - has the advertising aspect overwhelmed the brand?
If you are in the communications field and are a creative individual it will defiantly appeal to you. It's main focus is on branding and how it's been overpowered in the past and teaches you how to bring the love back into a brand.
